LUMI Keys Studio Edition offers poly-AT and much more

ROLI's campaign to bring MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) into the mainstream continues, with the launch of the LUMI Keys Studio Edition. While the original LUMI Keys was a fairly standard compact MIDI keyboard, with illuminated keys and an accompanying Android/iOS app designed to help improve users' keyboard skills, the Studio Edition ups the stakes significantly, by adding extensive MPE compatibility and more.

Billed as the first-ever controller to incorporate MPE into a traditional keyboard format, each of the Studio Edition's keys can independently respond to and transmit glide (pitch-bend), aftertouch, strike (attack velocity) and lift (release velocity) data. This makes it suitable for controlling the fast-growing range of MPE-compatible software and hardware, including the latest version of Ableton Live and, of course, ROLI's own Equator 2 software instrument.

The light-up keys of the original LUMI Keys are also present, and can be used for training purposes as before, or as a compositional aid, by providing visual identification of scales, chords, inversions and arpeggios.

The new LUMI Keys Studio Edition will also play nice with a number of ROLI's other controllers, including the expressive Blocks range of MPE controllers (to which it can connect either wired or wirelessly), and you can even connect multiple LUMI Keys Studio Edition controllers together. Magnetic connectors on the sides of the new keyboards let you click and connect up to four LUMI Keys Studio Editions together to create an enormous 96-note MPE controller.

Not every synth and instrument is MPE-ready yet, of course, but the LUMI Keys Studio Edition will play ball with traditional instruments too. You can either disable MPE altogether, and treat it like a traditional keyboard, or introduce expressivity in stages: one up from traditional 'piano' mode is a polyphonic aftertouch setting, with the next step up introducing per-key pitch bends (full-fat MPE, which includes release velocity, is called '4D Mode').

The LUMI Keys Studio Edition is available to buy now from the ROLI website, and is currently on sale for the very tempting price of £269 (normal price £299). The launch bundle includes the ROLI Studio software, a LUMI Snapcase, three additional ROLI sound packs, and a $50 voucher, redeemable on any ROLI software, including Equator 2.

LOOP Block/Touch Block don't work with Ableton 10 Live

Maya Lekovic

Hi, does anyone know how can I get Loop and Touch Blocks to work with Ableton Live? I attached them through Lightpad Block and Seaboard Block and the lights are on, showing it's connected, but non of the functions work.

Hey Maya,

Thanks for getting in touch!

You can map any of the buttons on the Control BLOCKS to pretty much any button in Ableton Live. You need to first put the BLOCK into MIDI CC Mode in Dashboard, then start mapping the buttons to Ableton's controls by clicking the MIDI icon on the top-right of Ableton's main window.

If you want to talk more about how to do this, just open a new support ticket and I'll be happy to walk you through the process.

Joe, could you explain how to get Ableton to recognize the Loop block as an input device? I can't map any controls to the loop block in mapping mode because Ableton doesn't seem to be picking up on button presses on the loop block. Thanks!

Joe

Hey Gabe, first connect the Loop BLOCK to your computer (via Bluetooth or via DNA connectors on another connected BLOCK). Then, turn on MIDI CC mode for the Loop BLOCK in Dashboard. Finally, in Ableton's MIDI preferences, next to the connected BLOCK in the 'MIDI Ports' section, switch the Remote 'On'. You will then be able to map the buttons as normal.

Thanks Joe, that works well! Is there any way to get the Play/Pause button to handle both playing and pausing/stopping in Ableton? Also, can you point me to definitions of the different behavior modes (Toggle, Gate, Trigger, etc.)?
